Progressing the Towpath Improvement Project
In 2014 members of Cycle Devizes and Devizes Community Area Partnership transport team identified areas for immediate action, including the canal towpath.
The community groups successfully lobbied the Canal and Rivers Trust (CRT) and Wiltshire Council and all parties placed the towpath as their top priority. Everyone could see the sense in making the towpath safe and pleasant for cycling, walking, pushing prams and wheel chairs by the Canal.
The Towpath project was designed as three distinct phases and adopted by the Devizes Air Quality and Transport Strategy Group (an Area Board sub-committee that oversees sustainable transport initiatives).
All improvements are well underway. Here's our progress report using before and after photos:
The first phase of the project (London Road to the Hospital Bridge) was completed last year.
The second phase (The Wharf to The Nursery/Bath Road) has just been completed.
The third phase needs further partnership and is on the 'to do' list. We had hoped that Sustrans could support with their funding from Department for Transport. Despite the rhetoric to get people cycling, it has been vulnerable to central government cuts. In the meantime CRT is filling potholes with the help of their team of volunteers.
